What is the standard and safest way of recharging a refrigerant into an aircon unit?

marvinmcastillo asked:

There’s a shop near our house where I caught one of the technician charging a R134a on their service car. I asked him about the charging process he did. The only problem on my mind is that, on the manual instruction of servicing of an a/c unit, it is strictly written there, that you should only charge refrigerant on the high pressure side which is not done by that technician. I think, I would be risky for the compressor if the liquid refrigerant flows directly to its system. Actually, I’m really curious on what is the proper way, not only for charging, but also for discharging of freon and compressor’s oil. I think that HVAC could give me a best and exact answer for this. Any help from you guys would be a BIG help for me as a cadet. Thanks in advance!!!

The discharge of the compressor and the storage bottle of refrigerant are at essentially the same pressure; therefore, it is pretty difficult to get any of the refrigerant to flow into the system. You can only get proper flow by introducing the refrigerant into the suction of the compressor.

The concern about liquid getting into the compressor is valid, but if you keep the storage container upright, then only vaporized refrigerant will enter the compressor suction.
