WHAT IS BEST WAY TO CLEAN FINE DUST OUT OF HVAC TRUNK?

Gene D asked:

I had some cement cut in my basement and it left a fine layer of dust on everything. With some effort, I vacumed it off the accessible surfaces using the appropriate fine dust filter in my shop vac. However, the main trunk of my HVAC appears to have a rather thick layer of dust INSIDE it. I have two access grates where I can get the vac into, but even there, the angle is so bad that there is still a layer of cement dust when I run my finger on the surface after I vacuum. I was thinking of spraying it off the inside with water and hoping it drains, or else taking apart the trunk and manually cleaning with a lint cling towel. Unfortunately, I can’t get the joining pieces that connect the edges of the rectangular duct to slide off…

I don’t want to waste money on a service that is just going to send a vac down the hole to flail around and get spider webs… I would like some suggestions from people who have dealt with this type of very fine dust (like cement, or drywall dust) in their HVAC.

Thanks!

Tough question. If I were you I would get as much out by vacuuming as possible but remember you dealing with a heavy dust that will be hard to vacuum.. After getting as much out as you can I would spray a heavy mist of water into the system trying to get the remaining dust to solidify after drying. I would guess that after drying you would then have a solid and it would take care of future dust problems. You need to do something, otherwise you will be dusting inside every day.

If you cannot disassemble the hvac lines to access the main part of the dust problem, but can reach in to feel it, then you might think about a professional. Or you could spray the (dry) area with bed liner in a can. seals all the dust for as long as the guarantee on the can.
