Need opinion of professional heating & cooling (HVAC) tech?

The other day I was sleeping and heard something in the duct work leading to the boiler, it was a critter (guessing a bird) trying to get out. Then all of a sudden, I heard it fall into the boiler. My question, do I need a professional to remove the now I am assuming dead bird? If not, by using the boiler, will we smell the birds body as it decomposes or will the smell go out the vent in the roof? Will the bird being in the boiler cause any danger? My hubby is on a medical and will be for at least another month and we really can’t afford another debt right now for a service call, so I’d sure appreciate some feedback and or suggestions.

If the boiler was on at the time then by now there’s only going to be a small piece of charcoal that can be removed. You are correct though most all of the smell will go out the flue (vent). Don’t worry about it unless it clogs the vent pipe.

FYI, it probably was a rat and not a bird.

if the bird made it all the way to the firebox, he ll be gone within the first burn. the flame hits the target wall quite fiercely , so just say a prayer for da widdle birdie and im quite sure your problems will be over. little smell if any

You mention both ducts and a boiler so I am going to say that the critter was in the flue piping to the chimmny versus the piping from the boiler. in this case tere is a concern that the carcas can block the chimmny’s ability to vent, reducing draft and possibly causing the boiler to spill flue gasses into your home.

Having your utility company come out to do a “Clean and Tune” , if they offer the service, will not only have them vacuuming the chimmny base (and the carcass) but also ensure your equipment is ready for to operate efficeintly through the heating season, using less fuel and saving you money.
A part of this cleaning is diagnostics of chimmny draft and should remove any safety concerns (or pinpoint problems).
